Moved here from our Tumbr page...

Our story so far…

Midori starts another tax season today, Emili is the spring term of her first year in college and I am working for the Walt Disney Company in the Parks and Resorts Online division.

For the last several years Midori has been working from home reviewing tax forms for KPMG. I think she’s been working for them for over 15 years. She started her tax career working as a receptionist for Price Waterhouse in Tokyo when we were living there and became a tax preparer while she was there. When we moved to Seattle she started at PW but then shortly moved over to KPMG where she eventually made became a Sr. Manager. In order to get a better work life balance she decided to take a bit of a pay cut, become part of the team that reviews the taxed prepared by the various offices, and work from our home office. She still works long hours, but at least she doesn’t have the long commute.

She is also a die hard fan of a Korean pop duo called Tohoshinki. She has been to several of their concerts and has become quite a fanatic. When her father passed away three years ago she leaned on their music heavily to take her mind off of the events. They are very popular in Japan and throughout Asia, and they throw huge concerts here in the US as well. She has traveled to LA (twice) and NYC once to see them in concert. Emili went with her to all three trips and I went to one of the LA trips and to NYC. He all had a lot of fun.

Emili is studying at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She is living in the dorms downtown just a few minutes walk from Seattle Center and the Space Needle. She doesn’t have time to be in any plays now that she is studying musical theatre but she is currently working on a project with some of her classmates regarding a retelling of the myth of Narcissus. She comes home every other weekend to do laundry and get some home cooking.

I started a job with Disney about a year and a half ago at their Seattle office. We build the web sites for the US and Hong Kong theme parks and for the disney cruise ships. We will also be doing the website for the park opening up in Shanghai soon. I manage a team of software testers who make sure the site is working correctly. Right now we are working on Android and iPhone/iPad applications called “My Disney Experience”. We have one in the market now for Disney World and will start working on one for Disneyland and for onboard the cruise ships soon.

The job has had me traveling quite a bit since I have team members in California and Florida, but it’s looking like I will get to cut back on travel this year. I’ll miss getting to go down to all the sunshine and warmth but I’m not going to miss all the lonely nights in the hotel rooms.

The other family member, Teddy, has been going through some kidney issues since late last year. The problems are chronic and will probably shorten his lifespan quite a bit, but he seems to be doing pretty well right now. He has to eat a special low protein diet of canned dog food and every other day I have to inject 200 ml of fluid under his skin. He’s not a big fan of either one of those things but he’s gonna have to live with it.

This is enough for our initial post. I’ll add more later.
